Trying To Buy A Vote For Gambling Legislation
A representative of the state of Alabama indicted that Milton McGregor tried in buying his vote. He helped the FBI a lot in investigating Statehouse corruption. Milton McGregor who is an owner of a casino in Wetumpka for pro-gambling legislation tried to purchase his vote. He tried to purchase the vote by promising campaign contributions from the friends of the casino owner.
McGregor’s Intentions Were Clear In The FBI Recorded Phone Call
Barry Mask who is the Republican state representative said that his intentions were clear in the phone call. The FBI had recorded the phone call of the casino owner for investigating purposes which lasted up to 36 minutes. The tape called Monday was played for the jury in the trial of the casino owner along with eight others. All have been accused of selling and buying votes. McGregor told Mask over phone that he was committed to help him in a significant way through his friends.
Mask Played A Great Role In Investigation
The FBI was assisted by Mask in investigating the matter and was one out of the three legislators. He was the second person to give evidence in the trial which commenced its third week. Mask said that the casino owner on Feb 14, 2010 left a message where he asked Mask to call him. Mask got in touch with the attorney of the Department of Public Safety of the state. The attorney made him get in touch with the FBI which had begun an investigation already.
With The Return Call McGregor Fell Into The Trap Of The FBI
Mask returned the casino owner’s phone call with two FBI agents at his side. McGregor was over the phone seeking for Mask’s vote. He wanted the vote for a proposed constitutional amendment which would protect his casino from raids. The gambling task force of the governor was to make the raids to his electronic bingo casino. He then spoke about helping Mask by getting campaign support for him as he was running for a re-election that time.
Mask Was Against Gambling Legislation
Mask did not vote for gambling legislation ever. He said that he would be politically hurt if campaign contributions from the casino owner were reported on his finance report of the campaign. The finance reports of the campaign are public records and he will hurt his image by voting for gambling legislation.
McGregor Tried Lure Mask By Assuring Him To Provide Significant Help
McGregor explained Mask that he has a good amount of friends whom he can influence in supporting Mask in the election. He meant significant help and said that his friends were players in that field. When Mask asked him for figures he said that he will have to call his friends for it. He assured Mask that he keeps all the promises he makes and said that he has made a commitment to Mask.
Making Donations To Get A Vote
Bob Geddie, McGregor’s lobbyist that night showed up in a fund raising program and contributed $5,000. The next day Mask again made a call to McGregor with FBI people beside him. McGregor in that conversation said that he has bought his vote and if now Mask wishes to vote for the bill.
The state does not regulate the casino which is located in Wetumpka. It has thrived from when the state regulated casino in Shorter of McGregor was closed. The casino was forced to shut down by the gambling task force of the governor. The prosecution is still on and the next person to be prosecuted is Debbie Moore who was Mask’s fundraising dinner’s organizer.
