The first evidence of slot machines was recorded in 1895 when Charles fey invented first slot machine called Liberty bell. Liberty bell consisted of three drums corresponding to present day three reels in slot machines. Those three drums contained five different of kind designs like horseshoe, spades, hearts, diamonds etc. It had a handle which on pulling makes the drums to spin and if the drums showed a same design on all the three drums then the player was given payouts. Those Liberty bells became very popular among locals in San Francisco and could be literally seen everywhere. But this didn’t last for too long soon Liberty bells were banned in San Francisco. This really disappointed Charles Fey.
Then in 1907 two men from New York Pitt and Sittman developed another machine based on Liberty bell but it consisted of five drums instead of 3 drums as in Liberty bell. Those five drums contain 50 cards. The winning criterion in Pitt and Sittman machine was different from Liberty Bell. It was based on poker hands. They became even more popular than Liberty bells. Since cash payouts were banned so winners were paid items like beers, cigars, cigarettes packets. These new machines were spotted in every bar and restaurants. Payouts differ on what the firm has to put forward.
Since then lot of changes have occurred in slot machines appearance, design, mechanism, payouts, technology etc. From time to time with the technology slot machines have developed into more apprehensive and entertaining.
Soon these machines were replaced with push button instead of lever. And then came the Video Slots which revolutionized the slots. Video poker became even more popular then previous slots machines. Then in 1990 which the coming of internet increased their popularity even more. Slots become common phenomenon in almost all the land based casinos and online casinos. Different variations were developed to attracted more people into slots.
