Backgammon – Rules to Rule The Roost

Backgammon is one of the oldest board games to be played. It is a very exciting game and has been played ever since the advent of the Roman civilization. This game seems to be similar to checkers and the structure of the board and coins seems to be similar. But there are differences too. The main goal of the game is to remove all the checkers from the board first. Basically the player has to move the checker pieces around and eventually get them back to your home territory. The game does involve dice counting. In this game two dies are used generally. This is called a “bear off”. So the winner is referred to as the “bearer off”.

  • The number of checkers used in backgammon is 30, 15 for each player. They are black and white and quite similar to the ones we use in the common game of checkers. The board played on is called a home board.
  • The board has a total of 24 points. These are in the form of triangles on which the checkers are moved. The opponent has to reach your side, which would give him 24 points. This would be your starting point, on the other hand, and would give you only a single point for a start
  • The player starts off on the right corner of the board. This is called the “outer board”. They have top reach what is called “the home board” meaning the opposite corner, which would incidentally be the opponent’s starting point.
  • The number of dies used is two. They are six sided and monitor and influence the movement of the checkers on the board.
  • The player has a choice of using one or two. When using to the score should be divided.
  • The game also allows the exchange of moves of the two players at certain points.
  • Suppose a player rolls the exact same number on the two dices, also known as a double, he gets to play an extra four times, moving his checkers four times the distance.
  • This is not possible while playing with a single dice. In such cases the player can roll twice. If the same number appears then the player is allowed to move double the distance.
  • If you have a total of eight on your dice, moves can be split in certain circumstances as 3 and 5. Giving you a separate set of points on each coin moved.

In spite of the simplicity, this game has not lost its flavor. It is still played all over the world. There may be minor differences in the rules of the game in the west and the eats of the globe. But of course these are easy to catch on. The popularity of this game has not died out for ages. It has been modified over the years to suit the present interests of players. This game is definitely worth a shot if you have not tried it yet.

Online Backgammon – Care To Test Your Skills?

Online Backgammon is a very exciting game. It has been played for ages. The game’s popularity has increased after the internet boom. The reason people get attracted to the online version is because it is much safer. It can entertain the player for hours together. It is also considered a family game. Online backgammon is not always associated with money. In fact any one can play just for the fun of it with no money hassles involved.

This game originated in Rome and over the past so many years there have been minor modifications as to how it is played. This game would seem similar to checkers for any beginner. The whole concept of this game is to move the checker pieces around and eventually get them back to your home territory. The game does involve dice counting. In this game two dies are used generally. But that would make it like any normal game wouldn’t it? To make it more interesting a third dice is used.

There are some tips one should follow while playing this Backgammon online. They are as follows:

  1. When your opponent makes a move called the advanced anchor, you needs to immediately make one too. It’s natural to become defensive if the opponent makes a real bold move.
  2. Suppose you lag in the beginning, it doesn’t mean that you will end up losing for sure. Sometimes things may improve as you play along.
  3. If you seem to be leading, then you might as well take advantage of the situation and get racing! This will be a great advantage for you.
  4. Sometimes you may end up having doubts about the final outcome of the game. In those cases just call a HIT. But this in turn makes the opponent more confident that you might be on the losing end.
  5. When you are almost sure to lose, hold on to your points and then wait for a shot that might be your “winning shot”.
  6. Most of the players of this game don’t realize that for every two gammons lost, you have got to gain one by winning a game to make up for it. Only then will you be able to sustain in the game.
  7. When you encounter a rolling situation, always save.

Prince Alexis Obolensky organized the first backgammon tournament during the autumn of 1964. This was probably the first and the best international backgammon tournament ever. It was conducted on the Bahamas islands and the total number of participants was thirty-two only. But this was considered a huge number, at that point of time, considering the popularity of the game. The winner was Charles Wacker from Chicago/USA. This was the hour of birth of the game of backgammon on a large scale. The game soon spread to different parts of the world. Each place the game was played, there was unique feature added to it. If you haven’t tried it, it is definitely worth a shot.

Backgammon can be mastered by studying the various strategies involved in the game. The most popular games and strategies are discussed below.

Running Game
The objective of the running game is to move all the checkers a.k.a men into a player’s home board and bear them off the board. The player has to basically move around the board as fast as he can, just like running a race. Once a player has moved the men into his board (home) he can start bearing off. A running game can be started when the player has lesser number of men compared to his opponent. Running game involves getting a checker back to the bar, which means, to accomplish that, the player has to move the checkers to points he controls. The idea of initiating a running game is suicidal if the opponent has got lesser number of checkers in his side. Poor strategy, high risk and little chances of success it calls for.

Holding Game
Even though more of a style of playing backgammon rather than a strategy, the holding Game strategy is extremely useful to any player, especially when the player is trailing in the pipcount race. This strategy is based on the ideal of keeping a point in your control that is located highly in your opponent’s board, usually a point in his inner board or the bar point. This offers the player a positional advantage over his opponent. The best holding game anchors are the 20 point or the bar points because you can hit your opponent with maximum probability as he brings his checkers closer to home, while points further back aren’t that useful. Very important is also the ability to understand the exact times to offer the doubling cube and to accept or drop a double when playing or defending a holding game. The distribution if the opponent’s checkers is also another key element that must be taken into consideration. If he has only the 8 and 13 points made (as in the starting position), he will have to leave a shot as he brings his checkers around. If he has made additional points in his outer board, your hitting chances come down greatly.

Priming Game
This strategy involves the use of prime numbers. It is similar to a holding game and encourages you to build on primes. In this way you tend to block the opponent’s pieces from moving forward. If you are able to maintain the prime number then the piece will remain blocked. You should ideally have six points in one row. These pieces will be trapped under the prime number. This will make your opponent struggle to move about freely. The ultimate challenge is when the opponent to starts piling up his set of primes. Sometimes you both just might be hanging mid way in the game and eventually end up in a draw.

This game is one that has multiple strategies. The first is the most common one that is followed. It is easier to comprehend than the rest of the strategies. So go for it!
